The Dunwoody Village got a little taste of Hollywood last week.

A limited series about the Murdaugh murders recently filmed at Morty’s Meat & Supply in the Dunwoody Village on May 16. The restaurant was closed for filming most of the day, but opened up again by about 3 p.m., according to David Abes, owner of DASH Hospitality and the driving force behind the redevelopment of the Dunwoody Village complex.

“It’s unbelievable, the logistics of how they pull it all together,” he said. “Get it all set up, decorate the whole place, and as soon as they’re done shooting, they’re out the door.”

The limited series, which is called “Murdaugh Murders” on the Georgia Film Office’s online production list but does not yet have an official title, is about Alex Murdaugh, the prominent South Carolina lawyer who murdered his wife Maggie and son Paul in 2021. The series is headed by showrunner Michael D. Fuller, who co-created the show with documentary producer Erin Lee Carr. The series stars Madeline Popovich, Jessi Case, Mark Pellegrino, and others.

Abes said about six weeks ago, members of the series’ production team were scoping out Dunwoody Village when his son Mitchell Abes approached them and asked if they needed assistance. They needed to shoot a bar scene, and were trying to choose between Morty’s and another Dunwoody Village restaurant, Bar{n} booze {n} bites. They eventually settled on Morty’s.

The show takes place in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. According to Abes, the scene shot at Morty’s represents a bar in Charleston. Abes witnessed the shooting process, and recalled the experience of watching Morty’s quickly turn into an entirely different place.

“We have a Dunwoody Hall of Fame, and we have a shrine to [Dunwoody native and “American Idol host] Ryan Seacrest,” Abes said. “Of course, they took all that down and covered up, so it looked like they were in Charleston. It’s just amazing, that those artists can do that.”

Abes said there will be another production filming in the Dunwoody Village area in about two weeks, but couldn’t give any more details.

“The whole crew and everybody, they were just great to work with,” Abes said about the production team behind the Murdaugh murders series. “Everybody was just great.”
