Dunwoody Police have arrested one man after a car crash that killed an eight-year-old girl on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
According to a release from spokesperson Sgt. Michael Cheek, the accident occurred on Sept. 6 around 9:25 p.m. near the LaCota Apartments at 6664 Peachtree Industrial Blvd.
The driver of a Honda Civic, which contained the child, pulled onto the road from the complex and was rear-ended by a Toyota Tacoma.
“The driver of the Tacoma attempted to flee the scene on foot; however, he was detained by Doraville officers who responded to the area as well,” the release said.
The child was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, but she did not survive her injuries, the report said. The driver of the Honda was transported to Grady Hospital, but her condition and level of injuries are not known.
The driver of the Toyota Tacoma, Jose Alejandro Cuahuizo-Varela, was arrested, taken to Northside Hospital for treatment and medical clearance, then transported to DeKalb County Jail.
According to DeKalb County Jail records, Cuahuizo-Varela has been charged with homicide by vehicle, hit and run, DUI, driving without a license, causing serious injury, and reckless driving. It appears that he is still in jail as of press time.
