There’s understandably a lot of concern surrounding Michael Penix Jr., who underwent ACL surgery for the third time in November. The long-term sustainability of his body holding up through the grind of a 17-game season year after year is a fair question. In the short term, though, the Falcons’ biggest concern has been whether their starting quarterback will even be ready for Week 1 of the 2026 season.
Not long ago, an ACL tear essentially guaranteed a year-long absence. Advances in modern medicine have changed that dramatically, and in Penix’s case, his recovery appears to be well ahead of schedule. He told Zach Klein that he’s already progressed to doing squats and believes he’ll be ready to go by Week 1
That’s extremely encouraging news for the Falcons, who would love the opportunity to evaluate Penix over a full season with an offensive-minded head coach before making any long-term decisions. It also takes some pressure off the quarterback search this offseason. Atlanta will still need to add depth with Kirk Cousins almost certainly headed out the door, but if Penix is expected to be ready before Week 1, the focus can shift toward affordable backup options rather than chasing a quarterback who’s expected to start and carry the team.
